Our “mind” is perhaps the most powerful, fascinating and yet misunderstood part of our body. Anything and everything we think, feel, process and plan in daily life is anchored by our mind. Any significant distress in the mind can lead to disorders, which can vary from slight discomfort to being disabling for the individual and their families. Fortunately, many mental health disorders can be treated or kept under control with various pharmacological and psychosocial interventions to enable the individual to function efficiently. At our department, the initial psychiatric assessment involves creating a comprehensive case history and conducting a mental status examination. Additional evaluations may include physical examinations, psychological tests, and laboratory tests. Our team consists of two psychiatrists, Dr. Vishal V. and Dr. Bhavyashree Naik, a clinical psychologist, medical and psychiatric social workers, staff nurses and support staff. Together, we conduct alcohol detoxification camps, facilitate family visits for patients, and offer outreach programs addressing mental illness, teenage issues, stress management for youth, and various counseling sessions.
